32nd New Zealand Fungal Foray, Lake Brunner
Moana, West Coast.
Sunday 6 May to Saturday 12 May 2018
Registration deadline: 31 March 2018
We will be based in Moana on the northern shore of Lake Brunner, on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, with four days foraying (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and the 17th Mycology Colloquium on Wednesday 9th May. The Foray base is the Moana Hall (corner of Ahau and Kehu Streets) and will be foraying in the many surrounding native forests.
Information about the Lake Brunner area is available on the Grey District web site: https://westcoast.co.nz/plan-your-trip/lake-brunner/ and a local tourism web site Go Lake Brunner: http://golakebrunner.co.nz
Transport
The foray will be held in the town of Moana, there are three main options for getting here (ranked by travel time).
- Fly into the town of Hokitika, rent a car and drive to Moana (1 hour). There are three flights a day from Christchurch to Hokitika.
- Fly into Christchurch and drive to Moana (3 hours).
- Travel by train from Christchurch to Moana (4 hours). This could be a great option for international visitors, it will let you enjoy the scenery. See: https://www.greatjourneysofnz.co.nz/tranzalpine/
Accommodation
We ask that foray participants book their own accommodation directly with accommodation providers. Some suggestions are listed below.
Hotel Lake Brunner
https://www.hotellakebrunner.co.nz
In Moana and across the road from the foray base at the Moana Hall. Ranges from Apartments to dormitory-style accommodation. Places are limited at the Hotel so get in quick. They suggested that calling them to speak in person might be the easiest way of making bookings, but it can be done through the web site too.
Lake Brunner Motor Camp
86 Ahau Street. Within walking distance of the hall: http://www.lakebrunnermotorcamp.co.nz/
Lake Brunner Country Motel & Holiday Park
http://lakebrunnermotel.co.nz/
2014 Arnold Valley Road Moana West Coast. A 3-minute drive to Moana. Note it is not possible to walk from Lake Brunner Country Motel to Moana, as it follows the highway and has no pedestrian access.
Holiday house/bach accommodation
Two holiday house/bach websites list a range of options here that are variously located around Lake Brunner and beyond:
Bookabach
https://www.bookabach.co.nz/baches-and-holiday-homes/search/locale/lake-...
Holiday Houses
https://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/Lake-Brunner.asp
Further afield, Greymouth (population 10,000) is a 30-minute drive from Moana, but one of the closer options is probably a more convenient choice.
Meals
We are self-catering for breakfasts and lunches. This will be done in the Moana Hall. There will be a roster for setting out the food and cleaning up after breakfast/lunch preparation. Catered dinners will be at Hotel Lake Brunner. Please indicate on the registration form if you have any special dietary needs (vegetarian, lactose-free, gluten-free etc.). The caterers will endeavour to fulfil special meal requirements provided these are advised in advance.
Programme
We will meet at the Moana Hall at 8 am each day to plan our daily trips. The foray programme will involve daily collecting, identification, and provision of display tables of the day’s finds.
We expect there will be reasonable cell phone coverage in Moana, but coverage may be limited in much of the forest we will be foraying in. Please be sure each day to leave your intentions on the provided lists at breakfast.
Mycology Colloquium Day Wednesday 9th May
Participants may present talks on any aspect of mycology. Length of presentations will be 15–20 minutes including questions. This will be confirmed closer to the time when we know how many speakers there are. Participants wishing to present should email the title and abstract to David Orlovich [email protected] by 31st March 2018. Registration for all attendees at the Colloquium is made on the Registration form. A group photo will be taken during the lunch break.
Wednesday evening following dinner we will hold FUNNZ and RBMMT AGMs
