Mycological Notes 47: The Status of Fungal Species in New Zealand, 2026

Submitted by cooperj on

This report and accompanying spreadsheet provide a snapshot in time of the 8,000 documented fungal species currently thought to be present in New Zealand. The list contains the currently accepted name (according to the BiotaNZ website) together with many associated attributes. The attributes include the biostatus (as indigenous, endemic or exotic) and any formal conservation status under the IUCN Red-List criteria or the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). The focus of the report and the spreadsheet is to document species for which we have little data and heir threat status cannot be assessed (Data Deficient). These are categorized as 'Missing' (not seen in the last 5 years), 'Lost' (not seen in the last 10 years) and 'Long-Lost' (not seen for over 50 years). Some species that were 'Long-Lost' have been recently re-discovered, largely due to Citizen Science efforts, and these are categorized as 'Found'. And finally, the subset of species for which we have sequence barcodes is documented.
